Rohatyn community

About

The Rohatyn Community of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast is one of the largest by area and most proactive in advancing local self-governance in the region. Formed as part of the administrative-territorial reform, the community united 36 village councils and includes 72 settlements. From its inception, the community has pursued a path of active reform, embracing decentralization and unlocking new opportunities for infrastructure modernization, the development of capable local governance, and the implementation of social initiatives.

At the heart of the community is the historic city of Rohatyn, renowned for its rich cultural heritage and architectural landmarks, including the wooden Church of the Holy Spirit, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The diversity of rural areas within the community provides favorable conditions for economic growth. The greatest asset of the community is its people, who preserve cultural traditions and actively contribute to the development of their native land, shaping a cohesive and responsible society.

Natural Resources

The Rohatyn Community is located in the Pre-Carpathian zone, which provides it with abundant natural resources. The territory is characterized by a diverse range of soils, including grey podzolic soils (38%), podzolic and deep low-humus chernozems (32%), as well as sod-podzolic, meadow, meadow-bog, bog soils, and peatlands. This soil composition is highly favorable for agriculture, particularly for crop cultivation and the growing of energy crops. The community also possesses mineral resources, especially construction materials. The most developed activity is the open-pit mining of quartz sands, which are widely used in construction and industry.

Given the terrain, climatic conditions, and soil structure, the territory holds great potential for environmentally oriented initiatives, ranging from the creation of nature reserves to the development of green energy, particularly solar power. The community’s natural-resource complex serves as a key foundation for the sustainable development of both the agricultural sector and a wide range of ecological initiatives.

Position

The Rohatyn Community benefits from a strategic geographic location in western Ukraine, close to the border with the European Union. Its proximity to major international transport corridors—including highways H09 Lviv–Mukachevo, T-14-17 Kurovychi–Rohatyn, and M12 Stryi–Ternopil–Kropyvnytskyi–Znamianka—creates favorable conditions for the development of logistics, trade, and industry. The distance to the Polish border is just 120 km, providing easy access to European markets. The community is also equidistant from the regional centers of Lviv, Ternopil, and Ivano-Frankivsk, which facilitates the rapid establishment of commercial ties. The community has a population of 30,648, of which 51% are economically active, offering a sufficient pool of qualified labor for potential investors. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture and industry, both of which are steadily developing and presenting new investment opportunities. In addition, the community is actively implementing modern solutions in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Rohatyn Community has successful experience in cooperation with international donors and organizations. Projects in healthcare, energy, social services, and education have been implemented with support from the Government of Japan, GIZ, the Hungarian Interchurch Aid, and other partners. The community has also established international cultural and youth exchanges, particularly through Ukrainian-Polish programs. The community is open to new partnerships and ready to offer favorable conditions for business development, social initiatives, and joint projects in the fields of energy efficiency, agriculture, public utilities, and industry.

Geography & Logistics

The Rohatyn Community, located in the northern part of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast in the foothills of the Carpathians, enjoys a strategically advantageous geographic position. It is equidistant from three regional centers—Lviv, Ternopil, and Ivano-Frankivsk—at a distance of 60–87 km by road. Three major highways pass through the town of Rohatyn: H09 Lviv–Mukachevo, T-14-17 Kurovychi–Rohatyn, and M12 Stryi–Ternopil–Kropyvnytskyi–Znamianka, providing excellent logistical connectivity with key regions of the country. The direct distance to Kyiv is 447 km, and the Polish border is only 120 km away, which creates favorable conditions for foreign trade and cross-border cooperation.

The community covers an area of 634.76 km² and lies within the Rohatyn Uplands, characterized by rolling and hilly terrain. It is intersected by the Hnyla Lypa, Svirzh, and Naraivka rivers, all part of the Dniester River basin. The southern part of the territory features floodplains and reclamation canals. While much of the land is designated for agricultural use, there is also significant potential for the development of protected natural areas and the cultivation of energy crops. The community is home to over 130 companies and more than 1,000 individual entrepreneurs, with 20 businesses engaged in export activities. Rohatyn attracts investors due to its convenient logistics, natural assets, and favorable business environment. The local economy is particularly strong in agriculture and industry, which form the foundation of the community's economic growth.
